Lineup:
Episode 164: VIFF 2024 Special
In recognition of the upcoming 2024 VIFF, the hosts chat with director Liz Cairns and film critic Marta Djordjevic.
This week we celebrate Vancouver’s film industry and the upcoming 2024 Vancouver International Film Festival. Unisgned BC put out the call to local musicians to submit tracks inspired by or written for film. We also played tracks from members of the film industry.
The hosts were lucky to be joined by Vancouver’s own Marta Djordjevic join us to tell us about her career as a film critic. In addition to answering some questions about what a film critic does and the path she took to get there, she provided some insight into what she is looking forward to in this year’s VIFF. Marta was even so kind as to share her viewing list.
This week we were also joined this week by local director Elizabeth Cairns. Her debut feature film “Inedia” is premiering on Friday, September 27th at 6:00 p.m. at SFU Woodwards. Tickets are still available here, and be sure to say hi to the host Brandon if you see him there. Elizabeth provided some background on her career and history as a filmmaker, including noting some of the side gigs that she has worked in order to sustain her career in Vancouver.
It was an exciting episode for song submissions, with Vancouver’s Hope Slide holding it down for local filmmakers. There were several submissions inspired by various films and television shows, including Ichigo Star’s “Gloria”, a film inspired by the Korean film “The Wailing” which happened to be one of the hosts favourite movies. We also played Elise Boulanger’s “Spirit Seekers”, which was written for a 7-part docu-series about allegedly haunted palced in Nanaimo.

Episode 119: BC’s Official Local Radio Show
Celebrating three years of broadcasting local music by expanding to another station, CITR, and taking the title of “BC’s Local Radio Show.” Originally broadcast 23-Sept-2023 on CITR.
Through the past three months Unsigned BC has been facing technical and personnel challenges. I am ashamed to say that for a period of time, the website was not updated. However, we have made it through that period largely unscathed and have actually managed to earn a new title along the way: BC’s Official Local Radio Show. Unsigned BC Music Society volunteers were able to weather a period of instability while continuing to push the organization further towards a state of sustained growth. Through this period we signed a contract with CITr to expand our program by adding a second broadcast period from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on 100.5fm. This makes our total broadcast time from 4:00pm to 8:00pm split between Vancouver’s two most recognizable community/college radio stations. This change will take effect October 6th to mark our 3 year anniversary as a local radio show.
With a quickly growing membership base, a four hour primetime broadcast slot on the two most relevant radio stations, and exponentially more reach than we have had in the past, BC’s Official Local Radio Show is a well deserved title. In fact, we are the only radio show to play exclusively BC music through all genres that is open to submission from any resident of BC, aside from CBC’s recently created imitation of our program.
As the provinces official radio program, we are excited to bring you some very impressive music today.
We kick off the episode with Summer Eyes and their catchy indie rock single “Bending Towards the Sun.” The young Abbotsford band is one of 18 artists or bands to get their first play on Unsigned BC this week. Three years in and we are still constantly premiering new artists on our program. Due to the rate of submissions, we are excite to expand to CITr so that we can re-visit some older songs that the hosts enjoyed.
This week also has three excellent debuts from EDM artists/DJs WLOW, 8:am, and Fram3s. Thanks to Kumo Events we have been experiencing a surge of additional EDM artists. The contrast between these tracks and the folk track which follows them is a great representation of the musical diversity we have achieved at Unsigned BC. We also strive to give a spotlight to traditionally underrepresented groups in order to present the most diverse show possible. Stay tuned to hear details about part 6 of our LGBTQ2S+ series.

Episode 116: The History of Unsigned BC
Unsigned BC has been on a partial work stoppage due to the President of the organization facing some unforeseen and significant changes to life circumstances. Fortunately we are all back on board and the Unsigned BC Music Society is operating at full steam again, ready to share with you the best music that this province has to offer. We will be making updates to the episodes page to add in recent episode as well as reformatting the song uploads. We used to upload our files to mixcloud and embed them on this page, but mixcloud instituted a limit on free uploads so we have been uploading files directly to this page in the past. A result of this has been a slow Episodes page which sometimes can crash, so we are currently fixing the problem by trying a new streaming service to replace mixcloud. Now on to the episode.
We have already received feedback that this is the best episode of Unsigned BC to be released yet. One thing that I am proud of when it comes to this show is how we are constantly improving in quality.
Episode 116 was essentially an overview of the history of Unsigned BC. From its origins as a briefly run hip hop podcast to its growth into the most popular local radio show in the province. We discuss shows, events, successes, and controversies. We mention our various media appearances, such as CBC Radio and AMI Televsion. We also play back some live performances from the various studies that we have operated out of.
Ultimately, what makes this episode so good is the music. It is not a “best of” episode. These are simply some examples of the kinds of music we play. A random sample of tracks and performances that are representative of our program as a whole.
There are some new songs that we snuck in to the episode in the middle portion, as well as some amazing performances. The Smokestacks are a group from Victoria that made their way to the Vancouver studio and put on an amazing performance. That performance is followed by Twin Willow and Shawdowfax, who provide some beautiful melodies to round out the vibrant and energetic blues/jazz/soul that The Smokestacks brought with them from Victoria. For our next episode we will take a look at some pop/edm/hip hop acts, but Episode 116 rounds out with more of a live band vibe. It is more than enough reason to stick around until the end of the episode. But if it isn’t, there is at least one more reasons not to skip any of this episode: the Song of the Summer results.
At the end of this program you can hear who 12 panelists and 5 judges decided were the best overall songs out of 200~ submissions to the BC Song of the Summer Competition. The contest was full of impressive songs this year, so making the top 32 was a feat in itself. Many songs that I thoroughly enjoyed did not make the first cut off. It was very competitive.

S4 Episode 109: The One with the Dogs
This episode was a blast! We had two dogs in the studio and around a dozen musicians, including a handful of members. If you missed it, Unsigned BC has incorporated as a not-for-profit and we are growing incredibly fast.
For the on-air component of Unsigned BC we are continuing with the open-mic concept. We kicked this episode off with a band who travelled all the way from Victoria to share their bluesy soulful sound with the greater Vancouver listening area. The Smokestacks set the record for the most musicians in the studio at one time, and they brought the heat with them from the Island.
We were able to fit in 5 live performances plus one quick set from Mr. Wubbles, who provided in-studio beats throughout the program.
If you like what you heard on this episode, consider checking out our past episodes below. We are also welcoming new members if you would like to be more involved. Member fees help cover the fundraising requirements set by the Community Radio Education Society that so that we can keep our spot on the radio.

S4 Episode 108: The Society
We are firmly in the unofficial “open mic” era of Unsigned BC. If you missed it, I created a sheet for local musicians to sign up to perform on-air for Unsigned BC at the Co-op Radio Station. The first five artists that sign up to perform are the five that end up physically coming down to the station to give a performance over the air-waves.
This week we have an eclectic mix. We started things off with a couple of smooth, easy listening singer-songwriter type acts and transitioned into hip hop and R&B, while Marc-e rounded out the episode with some fun EDM. In addition to the in-studio performances we were able to play a dozen local song submissions. All together a good day for BC music.
Beats for this episode are provided by Marc-e live in-studio. Originally to be broadcast on March 18th at 4:00pm PST on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM and streaming on unsignedbc.com / coopradio.org.

S4 Episode 4 (107): Happy Birthday Clarissa
We are now three episodes - or six hours - into the unofficial “open mic” series. If you missed it, I created a sheet for local musicians to sign up to perform on-air for Unsigned BC at the Co-op Radio Station. The first five artists that sign up to perform are the five that end up physically coming down to the station to give a performance over the air-waves.
In a departure from last weeks episode that focused on hip hop, this week has a lot of guitars. That also goes for the song submissions. While Ness Nost is a friend of the show and has been played on the show possibly as much as any other artist (which is not much as we are constantly playing new artists) many of the remaining artists are making their Unsigned BC debut.
Last week it was Estefania’s birthday (the girl that I am currently dating.) Today it is her friend - and my friend - Clarissa’s birthday. Happy birthday to both of you from Unsigned BC.
In other exciting news, we announced the Song of the Summer competition this week and we already got our first sponsor, Akashic Records Inc. Big thank you to them for supporting local music.

S4 Episode 3 (104): Multilingual Part One
Did you know that more than 17% of British Columbians speak a language other than English or French at home? Or did you ever wonder why there seems to be a Chinese restaurant in every small town in across this province? British Columbia has a history of immigration that has resulted in an incredibly culturally diverse and multilingual region. In Episode 19 we provide some historic context for how particular populations - ie Punjabi, Chinese, Latin American - became established in the Lower Mainland. In addition to briefly discussing some of the challenges faced by the peoples bringing these languages to the province, we will enjoy music from British Columbians in a number of languages other than English.
This Saturday we are revisiting one of our first concept episodes, the “The Languages Episode”, which aired nearly two years ago on January 21st, 2021. While our original episode featured a handful of tracks from bilingual artists that were sung in English, this new two-part iteration is made up entirely of songs that heavily feature at least one language that is not English.
Similar to the original concept episode, before each track I will provide a brief discussion on the history of the language being featured on that track as it pertains to British Columbia.
This two-part episode features the following languages:
French, Punjabi, Nsyilxcən, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Albanian, Spanish, Irish Gaelic, Turkish, Tamang (Nepali), Farsi
For Part 1 of this episode we kick things off with a number of tracks from Spanish speaking artists. While there is not a ton of history written regarding Latin American peoples in BC, there has been a notable increase in the local population of people who identify as Latin American. In fact, that number went up nearly 50 percent in BC from 2016 to 2021, from 44,115 to 65,970. When this was written I even happened to be dating one of the people contributing to that statistic.
In addition to the handful of tracks en espanol, friend of the show Gold Kid will be at the station with me for a live in-studio performance of some of his latest Spanish language tracks.
After checking out what BC has to offer for Spanish language music, we play a track in the most commonly spoken language in BC after English: Punjabi. Karan and Sharn submitted an incredibly catchy track in Punjabi titled “Surrey Aale.” According to a 2011 survey, over 20% of Surrey residents speak Punjabi at home as their first language.
We also play an excellent rock song and a couple of hauntingly beautiful French tracks from two female singer-songwriters, Nanaimo’s Elise Boulanger and Vancouver’s talented Maude. The tracks are accompanied by some fun facts about the history of the French language in BC.
Other languages we will touch on for Part 1 include Irish Gaelic, Turkish, and Tamang (Nepal).
For Part 2:
Alongside Punjabi, together, Mandarin and Cantonese are the most common langu
ages aside from English spoken in the Lower Mainland. Richmond singer and friend of the show Azk recorded her well received song “Stay Awake” in both English and Mandarin. This incredibly well-received track is bookended by a discussion on the history of Chinese immigration to British Columbia.
Finally, a submission from J-pop group Non Sweet provides the opportunity to discuss the treatment of BC’s ethnically Japanese population, with particular attention paid to internment and race riots.
While the remaining languages do not have as significant of a historical tie to British Columbia, there will be no shortage of fun and relevant facts concerning BC’s demographics.
Beats for this episode are provided by DJDudeWheresMyDJ. Originally to be broadcast on February 11th at 4:00pm PST on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM and streaming on unsignedbc.com / coopradio.org.

S4 Episode 2 (103): The Worst Week of My Life (with Pop Music)
For the second episode of the fourth season we stuck to the pop music theme and kept the live performances coming. Both Luvinya and Goats and Lasers put together impressive sets to round out the two hour program. In keeping with the live theme, DJDudeWheresMyDJ put together all of the backing tracks live on-air with his EDM mystery box (pictured above).
The submissions for the second half of the pop series contained some very strong stuff; the majority of the tracks played on this episode could slide easily into a top 40 commercial radio station without anyone questioning whether or not it should be there.
As is becoming a tradition, I snuck in one extra song that wasn’t advertised on the track list for this episode. For today it was Back Pocket by May Davis, a singer-songwriter from Revelstoke who draws on blues, Americana and old-time country western music to create her uniquely Kootenay sound.
Unfortunately I forgot to hit record at the studio so we have to wait a couple days to upload the archived version of this episode.
Beats for this episode provided by Vancouver producer and DJ Woel Jebster, along with live in-studio beats from DJDudeWheresMyDJ. Originally to be broadcast on December 17th from 4:00-6:00pm PST on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM and streaming on unsignedbc.com / coopradio.org.

S4 Episode 1: The Worst Week of My Life (with Pop Music)
I
Season 4 Episode 1 was an emotional episode, as I was just let go from the job that I moved to Vancouver for less than three months ago due to lower-than-anticipated revenue. Also, a fire alarm went off during the broadcast - wild ride.
I don’t know what is going to happen now. But it is a really good episode. My mom really enjoyed it. There are some absolutely beautiful tracks. My mum’s favorite was Radio by Adam Ambrose.
This was the first episode in which I played pre-submitted songs live on the air from the radio station - pretty much like real radio! It was a blast. The pop music theme really brought out some of the provinces most talented songwriters.
In addition to some excellent pop submissions, we were treated to two live in-studio performances. Tapatio is a talented producer/DJ with his own studio in Gastown. In his second appearance live on Unsigned BC he dropped a 20 minute banger of a session for the listeners and a small private audience.
After Tapatio wrapped up his set, live electronic music producer DJDudeWheresMyDJ blessed the Co-op Radio Control Room with 20 minutes of heavily philosophical EDM, with titles such as “Cockrings and Ketamine” making appearances.
Beats for this episode provided by Vancouver producer and DJ Woel Jebster, who is making his Unsigned BC debut. Originally to be broadcast on January 28th from 4:00-6:00pm PST on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM and streaming on unsignedbc.com / coopradio.org.

S3 Episode 20: Live at Last
I am finally here in Vancouver and broadcasting live from the radio station!
This episode represents a transition in my life and the show. It marks the end of Season 3 and the beginning of something exciting.
After making major changes in my personal life I moved to Vancouver. Specifically, I moved right next door to the Co-op Radio Studio. As a result I will no longer be pre-recording episodes; live broadcasts are much more fun and much less time consuming.
To celebrate the start of a new era, I brought in a talented bunch of musicians to perform live in-studio in the DTES. With beats provided by DJDudeWheresMyDJ, I successfully ran a live show by myself for the first time in my life!
While I plan on announcing a new format in the near future, there are a few aspects of this show that I hope to keep around for the long term. Specifically, I am hoping to end every show with a live performance. I really enjoy having people down to the studio as it gives artists a chance to meet each other and it gives me a chance to get to know them as well.
For this episode we started things off with the talented duo of Grinch Simpson and Marie Catafesta. We were treated to a handful of songs with acoustic guitar accompanied by electric and some beautiful vocals.
Second up was the talented singer-songwriter and journalist Francis Baptiste, who played some soulful and touching folk-influenced original tracks between telling us about his seven year old.
After Francis, we welcomed Madelyn Read onto the program. She played a handful of hauntingly beautiful folk-country-noir tracks and touched on her latest release, Fair Weather Rider.
We followed Madelyn up with a performance from the similarly named Maddisun. The country/folk artist with a soulful voice made the trip out from Cranbrook for this performance. She actually crashed with me and took the bed while I took the couch. Doing it all for BC musicians…
Finally, talented up-and-coming EDM artist Shman blew the roof off the studio after some brief technical difficulties. Overall it was an excellent time at the studio.
I have uploaded the file without edits to preserve a piece of BC music history.
S3 Episode 19: NYE
A show to put on before you go out and celebrate the end of an awful year.
For the first time in show history, we are broadcasting on New Years Eve! And we have a great mix of music for you to play as you celebrate the evening.
