Season Two
The second season of Unsigned BC broadcast from January 15 2022 to June 14 2022. The season was characterized by a more consistent format that was comparable to standard commercial radio.
S2 Episode 24: Drown.
Episode 24 features nine new artists that have not been on Unsigned BC in the past.
For our second episode back after a brief break for our benefit concert for Ukraine we have put together an Unsigned BC classic. A good mix of genres. From R&B and hip-hop to folk and rock and roll, this episode covers a fair number of prominent genres in the Vancouver underground scene in 2022.
Of course, as it is not a themed episode, it was not intentionally crafted to be representative of the local music scene. Rather, it is a collection of the dozen or so most recent submissions to unsignedbc@gmail.com. And as usual, the most recent dozen submissions are all very impressive.
This episode has a few returning acts but there are a number of talented artists and groups making their debut on our radio show. Vancouver group Hillsboro is one of the artists appearing for the first time on Unsigned BC, and their track “Painkiller” is an indication of the strength of BC’s oft overlooked indie rock scene. “Painkiller” is followed in this episode by Vancouver’s all female, all queer rock band Hyaenas, who are performing on July 9th at the Khatsahlano Street Fest! They are currently touring to promote their new single titled “Little Trophy” which we are debuting on FM radio this evening. It is a fun track, we highly recommend you check them out live if you have the opportunity.
The above-mentioned set is rounded out by “Drown” from Victoria high school student Whyte. “Drown” is an emo-folk-electronica hybrid. It is definitely one of the highlights of the episode. We are currently working on getting an Instagram for the elusive artist.
Episode 24 is a great listen from start to finish. It starts off strong with the new single from Chiara Jose titled “Fallin’”. The track has excellent vocals and clearly takes influence from one of the greatest groups of all time, TLC. There really is no weak spot on this episode. There are a number of strong hip hop and pop submissions, and a fun classic rock arrangement from the Lower Mainland’s Bordertown Bandits. We encourage you to tune in at 9:00pm and listen to the entire show, as you might discover your new favorite local artist.
Beats for this episode are provided by multiple producers listed below. S2 Episode 23: We’re Back, We Missed You.
Episode 23 marks our return to live broadcasting after a brief break for our benefit concert.
After a brief hiatus to prepare for (and recover from) our first live show, we are back! And we brought with us an amazing display of local talent from across multiple genres to make our first episode back a special one.
Due to the level of anxiety created by updating the website, creating new episodes, handling communication, and planning a fundraiser with nine artists - our first ever live show - the writer (Brandon) took a few weeks off from creating new episodes. This week we are happy to report that our fundraiser for Ukraine was a success, and we raised $400 to donate to the Ukrainian Red Cross. Every artist who performed absolutely blew the roof off of the place. The audience was incredible. Huge thank you to everyone who supported the show in any way, whether it was by buying tickets, attending, donating, volunteering, performing, spreading the word, or simply offering words of encouragement. It is all appreciated.
It was unfortunate that Unsigned BC slowed down for the brief period, but the break has given the volunteer(s) behind the show the necessary time to come back with the appropriate level of excitement for local music.
On that note, this episode is a perfect example of how exciting the BC music scene is. Despite not having the same reputation as places like Toronto or LA, Vancouver is not short on exciting new musicians.
The bar is set high early by the first track from Vancouver artist Alexis Lynn. This episode is almost a commentary on the depth of the Vancouver music scene and the talent on which it is built. Her track “Make You Happy” could easily fit into any top 40 radio station. It would not sound at all out of place blasting from the decks of a powerboat in the Okanagan, or on the patio of your local Cactus Club. In summary, it is a good song.
The same can be said for the remaining songs in this episode; they are impressive. “Make You Happy” is followed up by a similarly catchy submission from another talented Vancouver female artist, Sarah Eske. Her track “Let Me Go” has a bright, 80s dance party vibe with modern production and singing trends with hints of Katy Perry influence. “Let Me Go” is a well produced and upbeat song that is suitable for play at any summer party.
The last track in the first set of songs is by another female artist but it takes a decidedly different tone. “My Worst Enemy” by xty draws on definite grunge, punk, and modern rock to create a bouncy, high energy rock submission. However, the style of singing distinguishes xty from the aforementioned subgenres, with catchy pop melodies and fun adlibs making the music more palatable for a general audience while pushing comparisons more toward classic Canadian groups like the Tragically Hip over traditional female-led grunge groups like Hole.
Despite the strong start to the episode, the evening is not front-heavy. Episode 23 stays strong throughout, with notably no weak submissions. David July and 132 Capo follow up the first set with some very strong hip hop. The former is an affiliate of Caleb Brown and Unleashed Entertainment and will be visiting the Unsigned BC Studio at the end of June for an in-studio performance and a quick interview. Their song “Want it All” is a well composed blend of hip hop, pop, and R&B — a popular combination today that is not often executed as well as is done here by Vancouver’s David July. If it is any indication of their future in the music scene we can anticipate great things for the young hip hop artist.
After “Want it All” we play 132 Capo’s song “Vision” which will leave you equally as impressed. The young artist (only 17) is a Surrey native that has experienced significant financial hardship in his youth, leading to his early withdrawal from the standardized education system. The adversity this young artist has faced creates a level of resilience and drive is palpable in his music. “Vision” is no exception. Again, drawing on the popular blends of hip hop, pop, and R&B, 132 Capo succeeds in standing out in an oversaturated subgenre.
In the penultimate set, Uncle Strut and Grinch Simpson impress with submissions that would get the crowd on their feet and clapping along at any folk-rock show. Their tracks fit nicely into the late 2000s era of modern rock that heavily featured bands like Kings of Leon and Mumford and Sons. Not to say that their music is dated. Rather, they provide a very modern and refreshing take on a style of rock that has had waves of popularity from the 1960s through to today. If you were looking for a weak spot in the episode, you won’t find it here.
Similarly, there is nothing weak about “Every Single Day” by Ancient Machine. In fact, its quite an intense song. Right from the initial harmonized guitar riff - think Brian May in spikes and leather - the track sets the tone early. You are in for four minutes of high energy metal. However, again, the vocals pull this track in a slightly different direction than anticipated. With bright, catchy vocal melodies and a singing style comparable to modern emo singers, the song is ultimately not much heavier than many songs played on the radio today, and no less musically impressive.
The final set of songs by Valentina Tross, NDX, and Vaseux add solid evidence to the underlying thesis of this show - that BC is absolutely oversaturated with music talent across all genres and that it does not get the international recognition that it deserves. These final tracks are perhaps the strongest set in the episode. However, its difficult to make a determination as this writer could make a valid argument for any song on this episode being one of the best released in BC this year. I will submit the following: I am impressed by the submission from Valentina Tross (also I bet it would be popular with my mom), and Vaseux has one of the most fun, nostalgic tracks to hit the airwaves in 2022.
Finally, check out our article on popular Vancouver blog Bored in Vancouver about the show we just had. We have some exciting collaborations coming with the Bored in Vancouver blog coming soon! We will announce the details next Tuesday.

S2 Episode 21: Live Music May.
Episode 21 has a number of songs from artists who will be performing live in Vancouver this month.
May is lined up to be a great month if you are a fan of live music. It seems like every other artist has a show scheduled for sometime this month. That includes our own show, our fundraiser for Ukraine on May 28. Vancouverites being spoiled with quality live content and we are going to do our best to touch on some of it throughout the rest of the month.
In this episode, we wrap things up with submissions from four local indie/grunge/math-rock groups who are performing in Vancouver on the same day this episode airs! This is the first time we have had four new artists submit tracks immediately before playing a show together, so we took advantage. If you like what you hear, they will be performing tonight at The Buddha’s on 109 E Hastings. You can learn about their show in addition to our fundraiser here.
The episode has some incredible tracks throughout, including an impressive Bhangra/hip hop crossover from a group of Surrey artists, and a live rendition of “Stay Awake” by Richmond artist Azk, taken from our 2021 Summer Showcase.

S2: Episode 20: It’s Gonna Be May.
The twentieth episode of season 2 has a great selection of new artists and a handful of Unsigned BC favourites!
If you are a fan of classic rock, metal, or anything with face melting solos, we have a handful of tracks on episode 20 that you won’t want to miss. However, the majority of this episode is a collection of eclectic genres from across the spectrum, from hip hop and hyper pop to R&B and chamber pop.
The episode is made up entirely of new submissions from largely new artists, with the exception of a show favorite - Tenise Marie’s “Calm in a Crisis” which was selected because the host felt we haven’t had the chance to go back and play anything twice in a while. The folk-rock Country track from the Nelson singer-songwriter is incredibly easy to listen to and would slide seamlessly into any modern country radio station or playlist.
We kick things off with a beat from friend of the show Mr. Rust off his latest release Noise Paradigm. Mr. Rust creates some beautiful, atmospheric mixes with a classic hip-hop sound. It is a shame to talk over them.
The first track is an intriguing dark synth pop song by Vancouver artist Moira. There is a lot going on in this track; its strong vocal melodies warrant multiple listens. After Moira we are introduced to R&B/pop prodigy Connor Nelson, a Vancouver Nimbus graduate who is quickly gaining steam and racking up streams on Spotify.
Other submissions include an excellent 1960s influenced jam by Vancouver folk/soul musician Ness Nost which touches on themes of isolation and wanting to run away. We also have some impressive folk, rock, and pop tracks throughout the episode from a number of new and returning artists. Near the end of episode 20 we slip in three fantastic hip hop / hyper pop tracks from artists in Victoria, Vancouver, and Kelowna. You want to stick around for the whole episode to get at taste of the depth and diversity of the music produced in BC.
Of course, we also have to give a nod to the tracks that gave this episode its name. We play our first submission from the classic rock influenced group Chase the Bear and it is absolutely solid. After a brief foray into the aforementioned hip hop tracks, we return to rock with Vancouver group Marmoris, which represents a more modern take on rock music and features a hip-hop interlude, but is absolutely rock and roll. Finally, we wrap up with Okanagan group Moving Lines, which has a distinctly bright 1980s sound with some beautifully executed guitar shredding. From start to finish, this episode is a display of BC talent.
Beats for this episode are provided by the producers and DJs listed below. Station IDs provided by Dirty Purp. Cheap Flavor, DWI, Tello, Pats, Zavien & Sam the Seagull, Isla Noir and Alex Fraser. S2 Episode 19: Goats and Peafowl.
The nineteenth episode of season 2 has a fair amount of indie rock!
Episode 19 is a collection of locally produced music from artists living primarily in the Lower Mainland. While there are submissions from multiple genres, the episode is dominated by tracks that would largely be considered indie rock. Many of the artists on episode 19 have never been featured on Unsigned BC in the past, like newly formed rock group Green Alderson. We round out the episode by spinning Mei Anima’s new EP “Lethargic”, which was released the day before this episode (April 29, 2022).
The first track on episode 19, Alley Oop, is a high energy, catchy, 2000s garage rock influenced composition by the aforementioned Green Alderson. The track ultimately sets the tone for the first couple of mini sets; Tobacco Brown follows up the Green Alderson submission with a hard-driving, foot-stomping track of their own in that very same genre. At two songs in, it is already clear that the Lower Mainland is home to more than a handful of talented musicians. The first set is rounded out by an easy listening submission from the talented husband and wife rock ’n’ roll duo Foxx and Swann.
The next set begins with a Silent St. J contribtuion - a well executed acoustic ballad with standout vocal harmonies. Their track is followed by Emily Best’s “If You Were Dead”, and indie rock single that wouldn’t sound out of place playing in the background at any vinyl or independent coffee shop in the Pacific North West. The set is rounded out by a darker R&B pop submission from April Liang, a funky, super fun soul filled throwback titled “Soul n Me” by AHSIA, and a Sub Pop-esque folk rock song with major hit potential by mysterious Vancouver group Pinebarren.
The episode wraps up with 12 minutes of Vancouver group Mei Anima with their new EP Lethargic. The group showcases their ability to create catchy hooks and melodies from the first seconds of each track, with three of the four songs starting with pop-rock electric guitar riffs that quickly set the tone of the EP. Mei Anima draws on elements of jazz, pop, prog rock, modern rock, and all flavours of indie rock to create a product that could easily be slid into rotation at any modern rock commercial or college station in North America. A strong conclusion to a strong episode.

S2 Episode 18: Michael Wilford and Friends hi.
The eighteenth episode of season 2 is focused on the extensive works of drummer/composer Michael Wilford.
Episode 18 is dedicated to a friend of the show and runner up in our 2021 Song of the Summer Contest, the talented BC drummer and composer Michael Wilford. As a part of his prize, Michael Wilford won the opportunity to put together an episode with Unsigned BC. This is that episode.
In the summer of 2021, Victoria resident Michael Wilford released his first solo track titled “Scotch”. That track made it through a series of elimination rounds to the final round of Unsigned BC’s first ever song competition, the province wide 2021 Song of the Summer Contest. This past week, Michael released his third single, Esraela. Unsigned BC host Brandon was able to catch up with him and ask a few questions to provide a bit of background on the talented drummer as well as get a bit of insight into his most recent release.
Although he is living in Victoria now, Michael has strong ties to his home town of Smithers, which he describes as one of the most musically talented places in the country. After recently doing a few regional episodes and playing a handful of artists from the small BC town, his claim doesn’t seem so outlandish.
In this episode we hear tracks from artists who frequently collaborate with Michael Wilford including many artists he has extensively toured with. A number of the tracks are from artists we have played in the past, including Sail Cassady, an act that Michael provides the percussion for. Sail Cassady also provides the vocals on Michaels second solo release, titled “Rattle My Bones” which is also featured on this episode. Believe it or not, Michael Wilford plays drums on every track on this episode!
While there are some excellent submissions from Michael’s and hispeers, the highlight of the episode is his newly released “Esraela”. The vocals for “Esraela” are provided by Elijah Quinn, who appears on Unsigned BC for the first and second time this episode. His vocals add a jazz-pop element that make the song a standout submission. The composition is excellent, with a steady build up to a rewarding release in the chorus. Although he claims to need to develop his melody writing, there is not indication of that in this track. The entire track is packed with catchy vocal melodies and impressive hooks. After hearing his first three tracks, we are excited to hear Michael’s first full length release in the future.
While you are enjoying this episode, we would also like to remind you to pick up tickets to Cold World: A Benefit Concert for Ukraine. The fundraiser is our first live show and it is taking place in Vancouver on May 28th. You can get tickets on our website by clicking the above link or the Live Events header.

Episode 17: The Draw.
The seventeenth episode of season 2 features a draw for two free tickets to our benefit concert for Ukraine.
In Episode 17 we announce the winner of our Instagram contest - a draw for two tickets to Cold World: A Benefit Concert for Ukraine. The fundraiser is our first live show and it is taking place in Vancouver on May 28th. You can get tickets on our website by clicking the above link or the Live Events header.
The announcement of the contest winner does not come until the very end of the episode, and we have about 59 minutes of impressive local talent to share with you before that happens. This episode includes a number of returning acts and a handful of artists never played on the program before. Chimpit is a group from Nelson that is in the latter category, and they have an incredibly unique neo-folk, blues-country influenced indie pop submission, complete with a strong female vocal lead, intricate R&B / classic rock guitar work, and a build up to a driving kick-stomp beat that will have you finding yourself starting to nod your head along to the beat. For returning artists, we have a particularly strong submission from friends of the show Asterous, whose track “Listen” combines funky guitars with production arguably influenced by acts like The Police, then add in melodic, layered, bright vocals from a talented female lead to create a great modern rock sound.
We put together a sonically impressive episode with artists from across the province, including Nelson, Nanaimo, Nanoose Bay, and North Vancouver. Be sure to check out the artists listed below, and give them some positive feedback!

S2 Episode 16: Last Minute Gang.
The sixteenth episode of season 2 features twelve new artists and a new in-studio performance.
We had a busy weekend at Unsigned BC so Episode 16 just barely made the upload deadline and the writeup wasn’t available until the following Saturday. But it’s available now for listening, as are the majority of our episodes if you scroll down to the bottom portion of the page.
We hosted 18 year old Surrey rapper Draii over the weekend at the Unsigned BC Studio and were able to get some excellent live material, including the live rendition of their track “Destined to be Great” that is included in this episode. You can also find a preview of the footage on our instagram in our reels. We will release the remaining material through May and June on our instagram and youtube page.
The remaining tracks on the episode are largely from new artists that we have not featured on the program in the past - 12 in total. These are supplemented by a couple of new tracks from returning Vancouver artists Medu5a and Gully.
We have some really unique tracks on this episode that dip into genres that the hosts are not entirely familiar with. Cold Gods have a particularly fascinating submission with “The Edit” that certainly warrants multiple listens. Vancouver artist Gah Ming also has a very interesting submission that can only be described as an anthem dedicated to actor Timothee Chalamet. Both tracks are sufficient reason to listen to the episode by themselves.
In addition to the aforementioned tracks this episode has a great selection of hip hop and a great pop-rock track from Kootenay group BUS.
Beats for this episode are provided by various producers listed below. Station IDs provided by Alex Fraser, Isla Noir, Dirty Purp. Cheap Flavor, Death By Wolves, Josh Maitre, Toxinz, DWI, Indigowavv, Tello, Pats, and Michael Wilford. S2 Episode 15: Ghosts in the Radio
The fifteenth episode of season 2 features four songs with the word “Ghost” in the title and one song from an artist with “Ghost” in their name.
With our show consistently back on the air after an extended period of technical errors, we are finally clearing out the backlog of submissions we have received from hundreds of talented artists from across the province. The flipside of this is of course that we will put out a call for more submissions, but for now we will enjoy the fact that we have played nearly everything that is in the Unsigned BC Library as of now!
Episode 15 is another episode with a handful of firsts. However, it is a significant reduction from the ten new artists we saw in episode 14; a sign that we have finally caught up with submissions. This episode has only six artists that have never been featured on the program before… Which, when you consider that we have played hundreds of artists across 100ish hours of radio, is still quite impressive. Artists like Zoey Leven and Redhill have some incredible first submissions for the show, while Anita Eccleston has a beautiful - yet out of season - Christmas track.
In addition to the artists making their premiere on Unsigned BC in this episode, we have some other exciting stuff going on. Like a series of songs with the word “Ghost” in them, plus a song by a group named Apollo Ghost. Five songs in all, actually. That isn’t even the entirety of “Ghost” songs in the Unsigned BC Library! Strange idea for an episode or massive flex to demonstrate the depth of talent in BC/number of submissions to our show with a simple keyword search? You decide.
Aside from the focus on ghosts, episode 15 is also notable for the diverse range of genres played. We start the episode off with a handful of hip hop tracks, including one from Draii, a Vancouver artist who is currently (while this episode airs) on their way to Unsigned BC Studios to create some video content through in-studio performances. You can catch that content on our Instagram and Youtube when it is published (links at the bottom of the page). After a few hip hop tracks we touch on electronica, holiday songs, pop, folk, and numerous subgenres of rock.

Episode 14: Ten New Artists.
The fourteenth episode of season 2 features ten songs from artists never featured on our program.
After being plagued by technical errors and swamped with new submissions, Unsigned BC is back and clearing up the backlog of incredible submissions from artists across the province. This episode features ten artists that have never been played on our program before.
While the majority of the tracks we are playing on this evening are recent submissions, some are from emails that have somehow slipped through the cracks, including an excellent submission from the Smithers BC artist known as Scalawag. The episode starts off with a set of three strong hip hop tracks. The submission from Raptor is a recent release and is an example of his fast delivery and flow. In addition to the submission from Raptor, Vancouver group The Lily Dippers are the two returning acts that have been featured on our show in the past.
Episode 14 touches on several genres, from hip hop to folk, indie, emo, singer-songwriter, R&B, and metal. This episode is a perfect example of the incredible diversity and depth that is found in BCs music scene and consequently on our show.
Beats for this episode are provided by JZN-G. Station IDs provided by Alex Fraser, Isla Noir, Raiderboi2500, and Michael Wilford. Originally broadcast on April 5th at 9:00pm PST on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM and streaming on unsignedbc.com / coopradio.org.

Episode 13: A Handful of Sams.
The thirteenth episode of season 2 features four songs from artists named Sam.
Unfortunately Unsigned BC has been plagued with technical errors for the past weeks which has created significant backlog. In order to remedy the situation we have attempted to fit in as many recent submissions as possible into episode thirteen. And as many songs by people named Sam as possible. Four. It could have been five but we had just recently played one of the Sams.
Another important detail: this episode was recorded after hosts Brandon and Sean went to Vancouver to enjoy their first live show in years. The evening was opened by friends of the show Jvck Wilde and Aksel Boss, with rock group Tayos wrapping things up. Check our blog for a review of that show (coming late March)!
For episode 13 we decided to change things up a bit and use different producers throughout the episode. If you are unfamiliar with the show, Unsigned BC has been working to get producers involved by using their beats and instrumentals as backing music for the show. We generally use one producer/DJ per episode. This is not a permanent change, we are just trying something new.
The music for this episode is nothing short of brilliant. We have several artists making their Unsigned BC debut, including two of the Sams. Sam Jackson starts the show off with an emotional tribute to those who have left this life too young, followed by a catchy bedroom pop track from Vancouver artist Sam Gallaway. In addition to solo artists, there is no shortage of talented musical groups on this episode. Noca Project, Friendly Giants, and Future Heights round out the episode with a trio of sonically pleasing tracks from across the province, from the Slocan Valley to Victoria BC.
Finally, if you are a fan of emo and hyperpop, you don’t want to miss YXSI’s latest submission Let’s Stay Up Til Sunday Morning.
Beats for this episode are provided by various producers and DJs as listed below. Station IDs provided by Alex Fraser, Isla Noir, Raiderboi2500, and Michael Wilford. S2 Episode 11: Kootenays+
The eleventh episode of season 2 is about the Kootenays and surrounding areas.
Episode eleven is our second addition to the geography series, and it focuses on the Kootenay region, with a particular focus on Nelson. However, before we reach that region we are going to do a little criss-crossing of the province to some of its more remote settlements.
We kick the episode off with a track from Death By Wolves, who serve up some heavy rock from Vancouver Island. They are originally from Denny Island - a remote island east of Bella Bella located within the territory of the Heiltsuk Nation. The largest community on the island has approximately 50 full time residents. Their submission is followed by The Mechanical Botanicals, a husband and wife duo from the community of Tumbler Ridge. With a current population of just under 2,000, Tumbler Ridge is a planned community that was constructed in 1981 to facilitate the exploitation of natural resources, particularly coal. Finally, we wrap up the first portion of the show with a submission from XRay-Ash, resident of the Nass Valley in Lax̱g̱altsʼap - a village northwith under 500 residents.
After the first three submissions we give a nod to two visual artists rom the Kootenays - Sonja Rue and John Proulx. The former is a multidisciplinary artist who does visual art (photography, illuistrations, some incredible lamps, and more) while the latter works primarily with pen and paper. You can currently find the artwork of John Proulx in the Charles Bailey Theatre on the first stop of the Trail Art Walk.
If you want to purchase art from either of the artist we mention on the show, just click through the links we have provided on their names; John’s directs to his Instagram while Sonja’s to her website. Alternatively, you can purchase John’s art directly here where it can be found on items like stickers, T shirts, PJs, and metal posters.
Finally, we kick off the main portion of the episode with a number of acts from Nelson and make our way towards Cranbrook before wrapping up the episode. Beats for this episode are provided by KerbthaKid. Station IDs provided by Death By Wolves. Originally broadcast on March 29th at 9:00pm PST on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM and streaming on unsignedbc.com / coopradio.org.
Correction: Paulson Pass is from the beautiful West Kootenay community of Rossland, not Nelson as was speculated on the original broadcast.

S2 Episode 12: Movies.
The twelfth episode of season 2 is about film.
Episode twelve is our movie special! We asked artists to tell us about their favorite movies and send in an original track, and they came through! We have some incredible submissions; we even have an original song from local artist EDGECITY that was inspired by their favorite movie, Repo Man. The episode concludes with a quick chat with Vancouver filmmaker and composer Pennan Brae and a brief sampling of his work.
I enjoy all of the films recommended here, and there are some great ones! Gully from Rain Drop Records states his his case for Clerks I and II being considered outstanding movies, and I can’t disagree with that. We also got this excellent writeup that I will go over in the show and provide my thoughts on from young artist Carl Von Danger of QCB Entertainment :
…We grew up on Haida Gwaii in Queen Charlotte. We moved to Victoria in 2017 where we had our first live shows and met tons of amazing artists. We went back home to Haida Gwaii for a while before moving back to Vancouver in 2019 to continue chasing a career in music and find a larger audience.
My favorite movie would have to be Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or The Big Lebowski. I love Fear and Loathing because Hunter S Thompson was just such an interesting polarizing figure. I related more to his zany way of telling a story by being right in the mix compared to more controlled almost stereotypical ways lots of movies go about getting a story across. One of my favorite scenes is when he takes the adrenochrome and tweaks out. It seems funny and spooky in a relatable way when you accidently take too much of something you probably shouldn't have.
Thanks for letting us learn a bit about your life Mr. Von Danger! Without giving too much else away, one artist throws their hat in the ring for the Lord of the Rings series and I am incredibly pleased to hear this. I am a huge fan of the series as well as the memes.
We plan on doing more episodes in a similar format so that we can learn more about the artists that we play for you on the radio. In fact, we hope to make a part 2 for this episode in the near future! In the meantime we will return to our geography series with episodes on North BC, Nelson, and more coming soon. Of course, we will add in a couple episodes to showcase the recent submissions as they come in, but look forward to the second part of the geography series coming soon.

S2 Episode 10: Women in Music.
The tenth episode of season 2 is a celebration of International Women’s Day
Episode ten marks the second time we have celebrated International Women’s Day as a radio show, and our 2022 edition is not an hour of radio that you want to miss out on.
In March of 2021 our show was in its infancy. We had approximately 1,000 followers on Instagram and we had to constantly solicit artists for new music. We were also exclusively focused on hip-hop. This year’s edition of our Women in Music episode is a showcase of not only the talented female artists that call British Columbia their home, but the incredible growth that this show has enjoyed over the past year due to your support.
In the year between our episodes to mark International Women’s days 2021 and 2022, Unsigned BC has reached a level of community engagement that was not considered possible at the time of the show’s conception. This episode is an example of that growth. In addition to expanding into multiple genres, we have had an incredible volume of song submissions from an increasingly diverse group of artists. So much so that Episode 10 is made up entirely of women who have never been featured on our show before. That means that even if you have listened to the 67+ hours of archived episodes that featured 300+ different artists - all from British Columbia - you still would not have come across any of the acts that are featured on this episode to celebrate International Women’s Day.
What is even more impressive than our recent community engagement though is the level of talent on this all female cast of talented musicians that we are lucky enough to feature in this episode. The fact that none of them have been featured on this show is a testament to the depth of female talent in this province; songs are generally played as they come in and these songs have all trickled in over the past two months.
In addition to the female fronted groups like Shale and Fountain Bather, numerous impressive solo acts including MOIRA and Anushka Kashyap, and our talented DJ/Producer 9DOORZ, this episode also features the pride of Nelson BC, the duo of Anna Katarina and Aline Deanna together known as Rumour Mill. We also have a solo track from Anna Katarina with a feature from a dude, Chris Sol. Because why not. Happy International Women’s Day, Chris.
You like R&B? Victoria’s Alli Bean has got you covered. Soul? Check out our submission from Bella Cat. Rock? Try Igor. We have tons of singer-songwriter and even some country. This episode is absolutely stacked and has something for everybody.
Beats for this episode are provided by Kelowna producer 9DOORZ. Station IDs provided by Isla Noir - another very talented female artist who is not in this episode as they have been featured in the past. Originally to be broadcast on March 8th at 9:00pm PST on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM and streaming on unsignedbc.com / coopradio.org.

S2 Episode 8: Valentines Day.
The eighth episode of Season 2 is hosted by Brandon and Kait and is a celebration of love.
“Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is wing’d cupid painted blind” - A Midsummer Nights Dream
Episode eight is our belated Valentines Day Special! We asked artists to send us their love and heartbreak related songs, and they came through! So much so that this is part 1 of a two part series. While this episode features beats from JZN-G, Tapatio will supply the instrumentals for part 2. While the nearly all of the songs featured are new submissions, there is one exception for part 2, when we play fan favorite Kupeo’s Over The Rockies.
Of course, Unsigned BC sympathizes with the lonely and broken hearted. We have included a handful of tracks that address this topic, including the episode closer, Tarantulas by MC Scorpinox, which is an incredibly authentic look into the artists thoughts while dealing with heartbreak. The majority of the songs in the episode are pop/folk oriented (with few exceptions).
I’m also incredibly excited to share our first submissions from two incredibly talented female artists, Vancouver Island’s Katanna Ingals and Cranbrook artist Maddisun. Keep an eye out for these Kootenay artists like Maddisun, they are absolutely incredible! On that note, after we wrap up the Valentines day series we will be playing a very special movie episode. We then plan to return to our geography series with episodes on Nelson, BC.
Beats for this episode are provided by J-ZNG. Station IDs provided by Alex Fraser, Isla Noir, Raiderboi2500, Michael Wilford, Death By Wolves,DWI, Miggsthechemist, Josh Maitre, Tello,. S2 Episode 7: Black Heritage Day.
The seventh episode of Season 2 is hosted by Brandon and it is a remix of episode 22 from the first season.
Episode seven is a very unique episode. February 12th is BC Black History and Heritage Day, an event hosted by the BC Black Historical Awareness Society and taking place at the Royal BC Museum. In an afternoon that will feature a number of exhibitions, the Royal BC Museum offers the following:
Heritage Day is an opportunity to meet and talk with direct descendants about their stories and family history. The exhibits include images, artifacts and archival documents, and will take place around the Hope Meets Action: Echoes Through the Black Continuum exhibition.
Due to our episode falling on this day in Black History Month, we are revisiting our episode discussing issues relevant to Black Canadians in the music industry. This episode is co-hosted by fellow Co-op programmer Emerson Ettore, the host of the CanCon Show. In addition to our discussion - which includes an excerpt from Laz on Black masculinity - we review a handful of tracks from talented Black Canadian artists, including rising Vancouver star Boslen, who has seen their Instagram following ballon from less than 4,000 followers in 2018 to an impressive 27,500 as of February 11th. Their Spotify numbers are even more impressive.
After the segment with Emerson, the original episode cut to our Song of the Summer Competition, Rather than repeat those tracks well after the competition has ended, the remainder of the episode features four songs from talented Black artists in Vancouver and Victoria, including key team member Illest Behaviour and friend of the show Dirty CPU. There are so many talented artists, we wish could fit more into this episode. Shout out to T3 and Draii off the top of my head.
Beats for this episode are provided by rDream. Beats were not named so they are not listed in the track listing. Station IDs provided by Unsigned BC. S2. Episode 6: SOCAN Audit.
The sixth episode of Season 2 is hosted by Brandon and it features 12 new artists.
Episode six is one of the episodes that SOCAN audits to ensure we are meeting the minimum requirements when it comes to Canadian content. Of course, we always exceed the requirement because 100% of the music we play comes from artists born or living in British Columbia. This information has no bearing on the content in the episode, I just thought I would share that with you.
Although we are playing a handful of artists that have appeared on the show in the past, we stick to our goal of playing as many new artists as possible each episode. We have a few returning artists in this episode including Tello and YungSwei, but the remainder of Episode 6 contains submissions from 11 artists that have never appeared in the 1+ year that this show has been broadcasting.
New artist submissions include a track from recently reunited Nanaimo/Vancouver rock band Apollo Ghosts, a group that initially formed in 2009. We also have some standout first time hip hop submissions from artists Ms. Tea, Ezra C., and Youngflux. The episode also features a nice little track from Nanaimo teen Dominic Le. The song, titled 2010, has some Jack White vibes mixed with Michael Cera' and Ellen Page’s take on “Anyone Else But You” from the movie Juno. The remainder of the tracks run the spectrum from electronica to folk rock and 80’s cover songs. The episode concludes with a some ‘glambient’ electronica by the impressively named The Golden Age of Wrestling. It is a very strong episode so be sure to tune in live.
Beats for this episode are provided by SunnySays with support from Tapatio Music. Station IDs provided by Isla Noir, DWI, Toxinz, Miggsthechemist, Indigowavv, Josh Maitre, Tello, Death By Wolves, Sam the Seagull and Zavien. S2. Episode 5: Happy Tuesday (Remix)
The fifth episode of Season 2 is hosted by Brandon and features returning artist Wayfie
Unfortunately due to technical difficulties on-site at CFRO, the first broadcast of this episode was pitched down a step. We will be rebroadcasting on Saturday.
In episode five we catch up on what has been going on lately with Unsigned BC and give the listener some idea as to what to expect in the near future. We spin a ton of beats by Langford producer Penguinternet in their second consecutive time being featured on the program, and host Brandon selects a number of newly submitted songs from the Unsigned BC Library.
To this point in season 2 we have been able to exclusively play artists that had never been featured on Unsigned BC. Fifty-nine hours of local music in the first season of our program and it feels like we still have so many more artists to hear from! For this episode we deviate slightly from our pattern and kick of the episode with friend of the show: Vancouver self-produced singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Wayfie.
Wayfie has had a busy last few years. In 2020, when I first came across their music, they were awarded as a winner of Music BC'S Canadian Songwriting Challenge. In the following year they were featured as singer-songwriter for a Juno Award nominated EP (Dance Recording of the Year as INJA), and placed as finalist in CBC Music's Toyota Searchlight.
We start episode five with Wayfie’s latest single (January 28, 2022) Compliment. Wayfie has done an impressive job on production with this track, while utilizing his warm tone and composition skill to make this song about the inability to take a compliment feel playful, romantic, and somehow nostalgic. If you like this track, check out my personal favorite from Wayfie, his 2021 release Fairytale.
After Wayfie we go back to playing all new artists for the program, starting with an excellent hip-hop submission from Kelowna rapper Rei D. From there we hit a ton of genres, including psychedelic prog-rock, R&B, and more.
And a note to producers: send us your beats for free promotion! We use instrumentals from local artists as background, transition, and theme music.
Beats for this episode are provided by Penguinternet. Station IDs provided by Isla Noir, DWI, and Josh Maitre. Originally broadcast on February 1st at 9:00pm PST and again on February 5th at 4:00pm PST on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM and streaming on unsignedbc.com / coopradio.org.

S2. Episode 4: For Cooper.
The fourth episode of Season 2 is hosted by Brandon and is dedicated to his family dog Cooper (2006-2022).
In episode four we take a break from our “Geography of BC” series and play a few recent submissions from artists that have never appeared on the show before. We will also be visiting our movie series before we return to our musical trip across BC, so tons to look forward to!
The episode is dedicated to our beloved family dog, Cooper the labradoodle, who passed the day before this episode aired (Dec 25, 2006 - January 24, 2022). It is is hosted by Brandon with support on the beats from Penguinternet, the only returning artist for this episode.
The first half of this episode is exclusively folksy/rock/acoustic tracks, and there are some incredible submissions in this category. Truly hauntingly beautiful stuff. In addition, we kick the episode off with an instrumental from Vancouver violinist Royce Rich, who was deservedly featured in CBC’s 30 Under 30 Hot Musicians.
The episode changes gears midway through with a hyper-pop electronica banger from Victoria artist Lil Seni. At this point, the episode switches to primarily hip-hop artists.
The are some incredible tracks on this episode and I highly encourage you to check out the artists behind them. We have been overwhelmed with quality submissions in the past weeks and, despite having two weekly episodes, we are unable to keep up with all of them.
Beats for this episode are provided by Penguinternet. Station IDs provided by Unsigned BC. Originally to be broadcast on January 24th at 9:00pm PST on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM and streaming on unsignedbc.com / coopradio.org.

S2 Episode 3: Prince George.
The third episode of Season 2 is hosted by Brandon and explores artists from the Prince George area.
This episode is hosted by Brandon and is the first episode of our “Geography of BC” series. For Episode 3 we will be exclusively playing artists from Prince George, or Unceded Lheidli T‘enneh territory. Beats are provided by Run JMC from Revelstoke (territory of the Sinixt, the Secwepemc, the Syilx, and the Ktunaxa First Nations) and KidInPJs of Atlin (Taku River Tlingit First Nation).
In our geography series we will be playing exclusively songs from the town or region that we focus on for that episode. While this episode started as a Northern BC episode, the amount of submissions we received required us to split the submissions into multiple regions. In this series we will also put Brandon’s BA in History from Uvic to use, as he will be giving some background and fun facts on the places we focus on. More commentary on Prince George will be provided in future episodes - this episode was just too packed with music.
None of the artists on this episode have ever been on Unsigned BC in the past, making that almost three full episodes with entirely new artists. We start the episode off by playing two songs back to back from five different artists or bands from Prince George, for a total of ten tracks. We then conclude with four tracks from different artists, including a cypher from Big C’s Bullies hosted by Busta Rhymes and featuring Hunna V, Prada West, Kryple, and Fatal Wordz.
We will be alternating between our Geography Series and our upcoming Movie Series, in which artists tell us about their favorite movies, we play local movie related music/soundtracks, interview film makers, and more.
Beats for the first half of this episode are provided by Revelstoke producer and radio host Run JMC. Atlin rapper and producer KidInPJs takes over the second half of the episode instrumentals. Look out for them in our second addition to this series when we look at small communities in the north/east of the province. Station IDs provided by Unsigned BC. S2 Episode 2: Another Bonus Episode
The second episode of Season 2 is hosted by Brandon and features a number of tracks from new artists.
For the second episode of Season 2 we check out some more acts that were not featured in our first season, with the exception of the talented young producer/DJ from Kelowna BoyNotHome, who provides the beats for this episode.
There are some incredible submissions from across multiple genres this episode! We are particularly honored to play a track from Bent Roads Tavern, a Southern Vancouver Island band that was kind enough to donate to Co-op Radio on our behalf so that we can stay on the air. There are a number of great submissions on this episode - far too many to draw your attention to all of them. So be sure to listen to the whole thing! However, it is worth highlighting that back-to-back combination of the tight modern rock/pop sound of The Odd Neighborhood in combination with the following track by YXSI, which can be best described as trap-metal, is a great demonstration of the diversity in genres and sound that you get when you listen to Unsigned BC.

Episode 1: Welcome to Season 2.
The first episode of Season 2 is hosted by Brandon and features a number of tracks from new artists.
We initially intended to have our first season run for 52 episodes as we started as a weekly show and 52 episodes makes a year. However, near the end of the year we doubled our airtime and began broadcasting on both Tuesdays and Saturdays. In addition, our LGBTQ2S+ series ran for an unexpected 4 episodes and is likely to continue into Season 2. As a result, we ended up with 57 episodes in Season 1 because that just felt like the time to end it.
We are excited to move on to Season 2 where we will have significantly more series displaying the talent across the province. The first series we will be broadcasting is on movies and has some really exciting content, like interviews with filmmakers, songs that were written for films, and local artists giving us their favorite films!
We will be following up our movie series with our geography series, focusing on different towns across the province and the artists that call them home.
But to kick off Season 2 we are just going to play a ton of songs that were submitted in the past week because we have been overloaded with quality submissions and we just want to share some of these with you right now. We have a ton more to come that just didn’t fit the tone of this episode, like a track from Death By Wolves who kindly provided a Station ID for this episode and will be featured in an upcoming episode.
Episode 1 (/58) of Season 2 has a ton of easy listening, laid back tracks across a handful of genres, all with artists that have not been played on Unsigned BC in the past. Among the artists getting their first spin on Unsigned BC are The Happy Kid Toy Band, who bless your 2022 with one of the more interesting and fun tracks you will hear this January. Natalia Pardalis has another beautifully unique track in her Unsigned BC premiere.
We conclude this episode by spinning three back-to-back tracks from Vancouver indie band Coastal Town. Kait was particularly impressed by their submissions and wanted to share these three tracks with the listeners. This is an episode you are not going to want to miss.
