S3 Episode 16: Catch up.
Episode sixteen is a mix of genres with commentary. This episode is an attempt to get back on schedule!
Due to a change in mixclouds terms of service, I have had to resort to unorthodox methods of making the episode available for listening. I have uploaded the files directly above in two parts. This is not a sustatinable practice as it will slow down the site significantly. Anyways, any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, enjoy!
…
I am really enjoying my time in Vancouver so far. I have met some amazing people and had the opportunity to attend a ton of performances by local artists already in the short amount of time I have been here.
I have caught at least two shows a week, and I will be continuing that trend this Sunday when I enjoy a recital (buy tickets) from friends of the show Mina Mckenzie and Jack Campbell just across the street from my apartment. To celebrate this first ever time seeing two of my favorite musicians perform live, we are kicking this episode off with Mina Mckenzie’s interpretation of Sonatine by Ravel. A strong start to a talent-filled episode.
Throughout the episode we explore multiple genres, from hip hop and EDM to country, R&B, funk, metal, and modern rock. Submissions under the hip-hop genre for this afternoon’s episode were particularly strong. Rebecca Sichon and Ness NOST make standout vocal contributions to the episode, while Logan - who appears to have taken up guitar just over one year ago - submitted a shockingly tight and well produced track.
Quality production seemed to be the theme of the episode, as the majority of tracks today could slide seamlessly in to any commercial radio station.
Finally, despite having broadcast over 100 hours of local material, we are still discovering new artists every day. This episode has over a dozen artists never played on Unsigned BC before. It’s always exciting to welcome new artists to the Unsigned BC community.
Beats for this episode provided by JZN-G. Originally to be broadcast on December 10th from 4:00-6:00pm PST on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM and streaming on unsignedbc.com / coopradio.org.

Episode fifteen is our second episode exploring tracks that are EDM influenced.
I would like to sincerely apologize for the delay in the release of this episode. Moving to Vancouver and starting a new job has been a significant transition, but it is one that I am enjoying very much. Today’s episode is the second installment of EDM influenced songs, and after completing this episode, it became evident that we will need a third.
Sonically, this episode has a more traditional house music, experimental music, and pop-electronica flavor than the original EDM broadcast. Of note, touring performing artist and Brandon’s hairdresser DJ Overland makes her Unsigned BC debut with a high energy track. This evening also marks her final show of the year (at VanTek) We are also happy to share a live in-studio performance by Alex Fraser.
Beats for this episode are provided by Vancouver producer and DJ Shman, with support from Toxinz. Originally to be broadcast on October 29th at 4:00pm PST on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM and streaming on unsignedbc.com / coopradio.org.

S3 Episode 14: Live Broadcast (not available)
Episode fourteen is the first episode broadcast live from Co-op Studio on the DTES with assistance from Reylinn.
At the end of October Brandon went to Vancouver to visit some friends from school. In addition to catching an amazing show put on by SIESKI, Brandon invited a handful of artists into the co-op studio to broadcast an episode live.
This was the first episode that Unsigned BC has broadcast live directly from Vancouver, as the majority of episodes are uploaded remotely from Sooke.
Each artist provided the audience with a brief introduction to themselves and their work, followed by a short performance.
There are some exciting acts that you wont want to miss: Tough Sell / Sad China in the only group interview of the evening; DJDudeWheresMyDJ throwing down a live production set; the fellas from Atomik are brought a hip hop performance; Kupeo returned to Unsigned BC with his signature folk-noir sound; Masters in Music student Baylie Adams taught us a thing or two about brass instruments; and artists Kandyroar (accompanied by Anthony Aanderson provide listeners with previews of their coming live shows dated October 24th and 25th, respectively.
LINEUP (in order of appearance):
S3 Episode 13: Reviews.
Episode thirteen celebrates two years as a platform.by reviewing a number of new entries from different genres.
Exciting news. This show has been around in some form for over two years now! The original Instagram page and concept were created at the end of September, 2020. At that time the show was intended to be a hip-hop podcast. Things changed quickly and now we are the largest platform for all local musicians in the province!
In other exciting news, we are thirteen episodes in to this little experiment and we are back to marking the occasion by doing a review episode. If you missed it, Unsigned BC has been curating two hour genre-specific episodes weekly for three months now. On occasion we have taken a break from that format to play a number of recent submissions and provide some thoughts on them. These are called our Review episodes. Episode 13 will be one of these episodes.
We start the episode out with some excellent pop/rock tracks, including a new one from Duncan’s Darrian Gerard, a first play on the program for Vancouver noir-pop star KENZiE, and a debut single from 16 year old Phia of Comox. As it is a review episode, the host Brandon will provide commentary and background information on the artists throughout the program.
After a brief introduction to BC’s pop/rock scene (with an unintentional focus on female artists), the episode will shift through a number of genres, including pop, indie rock, folk, and hip hop.

Twelve takes in to this experiment of playing one sugbenre every episode and we are on to the punk music.
In Episode 12 we will be examining BC’s punk/hardcore scene. Throughout greater Vancouver, the punk scene has arguably the regions most dedicated fans. Every weekend at venues like the Buddha on East Hastings, dozens of youth cram in to a very punk-rock looking space and thrash about for hours on end in an angsty expression of revelry. This episode is a celebration of that culture.
The first thing to note is that many of the songs on this episode were written and performed by incredibly talented musicians. These are not just some teens strumming mindless powerchords. There are some seriously well written and engaging songs in this episode.
Right off the top of the episode we start with three strong tracks, which finish off with a very catchy track from Rong titled “Moving On”.
Beats for this episode were provided by Vancouver producer Tristan Sutro. The original air date for this episode is Saturday, October 8th, 2022 at 4:00pm.

S3 Episode 11: Country
The eleventh episode of season 3 has “gone country” as they say.
In the past we have played tracks that would be considered country or Americana and I had said, to borrow a corporate phrase, we will circle back around to those artists at another time. This is that otherr time.
While country is generally not the focus of the music scene in BC, the province is certainly home to some incredible country talent. We were able to get about half of it on this episode, so look forward to part 2.

S3 Episode 9: A Snapshot (2 hours)
The nineth episode of season 3 is our first 120 minute episode in our new timeslot.
Big changes are happening at Unsigned BC. After a brief hiatus, we are back. Or, at least Brandon is. And for the first episode back he has selected an eclectic mix of music that represents a cross-genre sample of some of the best music that British Columbia has to offer.
In an exciting step, this episode is the first to be broadcast in our new TWO HOUR slot, Saturdays from 4-6pm. That is prime time radio folks.
The songs that will be played in this episode are all songs that have never been played in the past on Unsigned BC. In fact, in the entire twenty-two song episode, only five songs come from artists that we have featured in the nearly two year history of the program. This episode is a testament to the depth and talent in the BC music scene.
As it is difficult to highlight tracks in an episode where each song is hand-picked for it’s quality, I will briefly touch on some of the exciting new submissions that round out this episode. To start, the talented Anna Katarina of Nelson BC is debuting her new track titled December (pre-save here), which does not officially come out until the Friday following this broadcast. We follow that up with a new submission from show favorite and hyper-pop heavyweight Ancrnotokay. Finally, we round the episode out with two excellent tracks from artists making their Unsigned BC debut, Kzulu and Shman, who provide us with some impressive examples of hip-hop and dub-step, respectively.
I would also like to bring attention to the incredible submission from Rob Fillo, who entertained the folks who gathered for a BBQ at Brandon’s place in the summer of 2022 with his impressive musicianship. Happy belated 40th birthday Rob.
To be perfectly clear, there are about 17 more songs I would like to highlight due to the quality of the songs submitted lately.
This episode is dedicated to Kait, who turns 31 on Sunday.
Beats for this episode are provided by JZN-G. Originally to be broadcast on August 23rd at 9:00pm PST on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM and streaming on unsignedbc.com / coopradio.org.

S3 Episode 7: Alt Label Light Organ.
The seventh episode of season 3 is dedicated to local alt label Light Organ.
To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Vancouver’s alternative indie label, Light Organ Records, we are dedicating an entire episode to play the local artists on their roster. More specifically, we are playing the artists that will be performing at the first ever Summerlight Festival which takes place in Vancouver on August 20th and is a celebration of the aforementioned anniversary.
Perhaps equally as exciting as the chance to hear what the local “signed” alternative music sounds like in the province, we will also be giving away two free tickets to the Summerlight Festival. Brandon and Kait from Unsigned BC also plan to attend the festivities.

S3 Episode 5: Hype/ High Energy Hip Hop.
The fifth episode of season 3 is composed of high energy hip hop music.
Unfortunately, due to a technical error the writeup and track list for this episode was lost. The track list will be restored shortly, Thank you for your patience.
S3 Episode 4: Bands of BC (Pop/ Indie/ Alt).
The fourth episode of season 3 is songs from modern rock bands broadly under the pop indie/alt subgenres.
Unsigned BC’s “final” season is moving ahead smoothly, with the project of indexing the province’s musical output 2020-2022 by genre (and sometimes region) well underway. So far, as a program we have examined easy listening songs by women in episode 1, metal in episode 2, and electronic influenced music in episode 3. In episode 4, we take a look at some of the alt/indie/pop rock bands - broadly under the banner of modern rock - that call British Columbian home.
The majority of the songs submitted to Unsigned BC are by solo acts or duos. With the growing popularity of hip hop and DIY music production, more and more would-be artists seem to be eschewing the practice of learning an instrument, getting together in a garage or basement with some friends, and trying to stay on time and in key. This episode focuses on some of the talented BC musicians keeping that practice alive.
Most of the music in this episode would be considered alternative rock or indie rock with a pop twist, and would fit in easily on your favorite commercial modern rock radio station.
All of the beats for this episode were provided by Vancouver producer JZN-G. Artists who provided station IDs in season 3 will be identified every 10 episodes. This episode was originally aired on Saturday, July 30th at 4:00pm on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5fm.

S3 Episode 3: Electronica.
The third episode of season 3 is songs that are influenced by electronica.
Given all that has been going on lately in the life of the person responsible for running the entire project, things have gotten a little behind and I apologize for that. This excellent episode is one that originally aired on Saturday July 23rd (2022) at 4:00pm on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio. It features tracks that are influenced by electronic music in the most general sense. This means this hour of radio includes subgenres like house, hyper-pop, trap metal, EDM, drum N bass, techno, and some other fun experimental stuff.
One exciting aspect of this episode is that it highlights the strength of the local scene when it comes to the relatively new sub-genre of hyper-pop. While not a glossary of the entire local scene, this episode touches on some major players like Ancrnotokay and Howl, both artists who have performed in live events for Unsigned BC. You can find Ancrnotokay’s performance at our virtual showcase or check out pictures of our Benefit Concert for Ukraine in which Howl did an amazing job as the evening’s headliner.
In addition to the aforementioned Vancouver hyper-pop artists, this episode also features the young up-and-coming Victoria artists Lil Seni and Corefish, along with a very special in-studio performance of Lulu (the last performance at the original Unsigned BC Studio) from friends of the show Glitter Kid. Overall, a strong showing from the hyper-pop kids.
Vancouver has a massive DJ/House scene which - to be completely honest - I have largely failed to solicit songs from at this point. However, this sixty minutes of radio is a testament to how pervasive the sounds and techniques used in electronic music have become in contemporary music, and how well these sounds have been put to use in the local scene. Look out for part 2.
NOTE: In a rare change for Unsigned BC, no tracks were used exclusively as backing tracks. All hosting was done over the introductory bars of the tracks which were sometimes looped for time. This is because so many of the tracks in this episode are instrumental. We hope you enjoy.

S3 Episode 2: Homegrown Metal.
The second episode of season 3 is made up entirely of metal tracks from BC artists.
Only two episodes in to our third season and a pattern is already becoming recognizable. In an attempt to further increase the utility of unsignedbc, com as an index for local musicians and music fans, our most recent season will be broken down into episodes based on genres or other identifying factors like region or identity.
As a result of this new format, fans of local music and musicians alike will be able to play through an entire episode of the genre that they are looking for without having to hop around between episodes. Now, if an indie band is looking for another band to open up for them in a certain town, they can just head to the episode that matches the genre they are looking for (or in some cases, the region) and listen through the episode. When they have identified what they are looking for, the track listing below provides all of the reference material required to get in contact with the artist or band.
For our second episode we have decided to examine metal bands in BC to recognize the Armstrong Metal Fest occurring this weekend in the Okanagan. In fact, we kick this episode off with a double feature from a band that will be performing on Friday (July 15th) evening, the incredibly talented Surrey BC group Iron Kingdom. After that, the episode progresses through a number of fast paced metal tracks, touching on various subgenres that I would not know the name to. I would also like to take a moment to highlight Eddie Lam’s all-Asian metal group Cry of Silence. Their submission “Don’t Want You Near” is the penultimate track on this face melting episode.
Anyways, we hope everyone is having a safe summer and enjoying themselves. We also hope you enjoy this episode that showcases some of the best metal acts across the province.
Beats for this episode are provided by JZN-G. Station IDs provided by Gully, Dirty Purp, Indigowavv, Isla Noir, MOIRA, Cheap Flavor, Michael Wilford, Josh Maitre, and Alex Fraser. Originally broadcast on July 16th at 4:00pm PST on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM and streaming on unsignedbc.com / coopradio.org.

S3 Episode 1:Easy Listening Songs by Women.
The first episode of season 3 features all easy-listening songs by women from BC.
Just like that, it’s season three. After eighty one hours of community radio, a successful benefit concert, and a ton of fun community engagement, Unsigned BC is finally ready to bring you the listening experience that you deserve.
There are going to be a number of changes to the show. While the details of these changes will come out at a later date, this first episode will serve as an example of the kind of changes Brandon is making when it comes to the radio broadcast. For the season premiere, after significant research and consideration, Brandon has curated some of what he has determined to be British Columbia’s best easy listening music written and performed by women.
I really want to emphasize that last point. These are all women that live in the province of British Columbia. All artists that you generally would not hear on commercial radio. Despite this lack of internationally famous artists contributing to the lineup, this collection of songs might make Unsigned BC’s season three premiere one of the best hours of terrestrially broadcast radio in 2022.
Given the overall strength of this episode it is not entirely possible to highlight any particular songs. With one or two exceptions, these are all new songs for Unsigned BC. Half of them are new artists. More than anything, this episode is a testament to the depth of the music scene in BC.
On a final note, be sure to listen to the tracks during the episodes intro, as they are some highlights from future episodes.
Beats for this episode are provided by JZN-G. Station IDs provided by Gully, Dirty Purp, Indigowavv, Isla Noir, MOIRA, Cheap Flavor, Michael Wilford, Josh Maitre, and Alex Fraser. Originally broadcast on July 9th at 4:00pm PST and July 12th at 9:00pm PST on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM and streaming on unsignedbc.com / coopradio.org.
