Episode 57: LGBTQ2S+ Part 4 with YvngMilez.
Episode 57 is hosted by Brandon. It features an interview with YvngMilez and tracks from LGBTQ2S+ artists across the province.

We premiere a track from the talented emily. who I mistakenly credit as Maxal Tha Best. Regardless, excellent submission remixing a track by the artist formerly known as Kanye West.
We also premiere Not Sisters and Oceanside85 for the very first time on Unsigned BC Radio! Really demonstrates the depth of the talent in this province.

Episode 56: A Bonus Episode.
Episode 56 is hosted by Brandon and Kait. It features a number of recent releases from artists never played on Unsigned BC.
Our LGBTQ2S+ Series will resume momentarily to wrap up season 1 of Unsigned BC with a special episode featuring Ms, Monica Miles. Until then we are taking a quick break to bring you some of the most recent submissions to our show.
Episode 56 is a bonus episode hosted by Brandon and Kait and largely made up of songs submitted in December 2021. While we had some great submissions in all genres, we chose to keep this episode light and went with tracks similar to ones that you might hear on a top 40 radio station.
In addition to being all recent submissions, Episode 56 does not have a single artist who has appeared on our program in the past (aside from Francis Baptiste who provides a track in the Syilx language). We kick things off with a track called Bitter by bbkate. As a bitter person, Brandon particularly enjoyed this song. We follow that up with an amazing track from a member of our theatre group, She Doesn’t Even Go Here, Astra Not.
After that strong start the episode doesn’t let up for one track, as we give you quality songs from a diverse lineup of artists living in the province of British Columbia,

Episode 56: LGBTQ2S+ with Glitter Kid.
Episode 55 is hosted by Brandon with interviews by Brandon and Kait. It features two in-studio performances and an interview from Glitter Kid,
Our LGBTQ2S+ Series resumes and with style! This episode is centered around an interview with Glitter Kid and their live in-studio performances of Sally and Lulu. We also set this episode up with a strong foundation by using the electronic musings of Paperwave - Co-op’s very own Kimit - as the instrumental sound package for this episode.
Glitter Kid is a hyper-pop project featuring producer Member One, singer / rapper 888WAB, and Cherry Uno. We were able to get 2/3 of Glitter Kid in the studio (Member One sat this one out) for an interview and in-studio performance. Cherry Uno provides some perspective into what it is like to be a transgender artist working in hip hop, a traditionally transphobic space. Hyper-pop has its own culture that we don’t really touch on in this episode, but it is a genre that is closely related to hip hop.
In addition to the live performances from Glitter Kid and the incredible production from Paperwave, we spin a number of quality tracks from Queer artists across the province of BC. We kick the episode off with a showtunes-esque folk-rock track from the talented Vancouver artist Matthew Presidente. We also feature Sail Cassady and Old Soul Rebel, who both have the same guitarist, friend of the show Michael Wilford.
Beats for this episode are provided by Paperwave. Station IDs are provided by Isla Noir, Alex Fraser, and Toxinz. Interviews conducted by Brandon and Kait. Originally broadcast on Saturday January 1st 2022 at 4:00pm PST on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM.

Episode 54: A Very Tyler Shaw Christmas.
Episode 54 is hosted by Brandon. It is a Christmas special with our first ever Platinum artist to appear on the show, Tyler Shaw! He also recently released a Christmas album,
We have been interrupted in the middle of our LGBTQ2S+ series by the Holidays! We will return with parts 3 and 4 of the series, but for now we have some beautiful festive music to offer provided by Tyler Shaw and company.
Despite having moved to the east coast and setting down roots, Tyler Shaw is BC born and raised. In this episode we discuss the valuable experience Tyler gained early in his career before he moved to Toronto. Tyler also provides some commentary on his current connection to the Lower Mainland.
Early on in the episode we play two older tracks from Tyler with approx 20M streams on Spotify each to give you an idea of who he is if you are not able to place a sound to the name. After this, we dive into a couple new tracks from his 2021 self-titled release. In addition to some brief discussion on mental health and Tyler’s advocacy, the interview is littered with bits of understated wisdom.
Throughout the episode we sprinkle in some of Tyler’s recent Christmas releases. We conclude with two Christmas submissions from BC artists, including RAIAAN, a self professed fan of Tyler Shaw.

This series is a enthusiastically produced capsule of regional Queer music culture, with input from numerous artists with diverse experiences to share. All artists featured identify as members of the LGBTQ2S+ community.
The episode is set to the BIG GAY HOUSE beats provided by the talented Vancouver producer Sam Steele. In addition to pioneering the genre of BIG GAY HOUSE, Sam has an incredibly impressive curriculum vitae, including their status as a Berklee School of Music alum, and their role in acclaimed duo Dianna Boss.
We kick things off with one of my favourite tracks to come through Unsigned BC - Waking Life by Howl. From there we revisit the soothing folk melodies of Kupeo before we move on to the second portion of our interview with Randall Garrison, MP (NDP). This portion of the interview discusses the challenges he has faced as an out Member of Parliament, both inside and outside the House of Commons. After a deeply personal and powerful song from Strange Tides, we move on to our interview with Oatmeal Queen.
Among other highlights, Oatmeal Queen gives us some insight into their time spent working on a cruise ship in addition some illuminating insight into their gender journey. I certainly learned from this interview. We cap things off with three tracks from Oatmeal Queen.

All artists featured identify as members of the LGBTQ2S+ community.
Part one is set entirely to the music of Vancouver composer and phenom Jack Campbell. You can find an entire episode dedicated to his work here, or listen to their scoring of our original radio drama, the Yellow Wallpaper, here. Jingles and theme music from the Yellow Wallpaper is used as transition music.
This episode features an interview with Vancouver/Victoria folk-baroque-pop-rock artist Kele Flemming. We briefly discuss her experience fronting a band as a Queer woman in a male dominated industry. We also have an interview with NDP Member of Parliament representing Esquimalt—Saanich—Sooke, Randall Garrison. This episode provides some background on the elected representative, while part 2 will delve into some of the challenges they have faced as an out MP (both inside and outside the House of Commons).
In the LGBT2s+ acronym, many residents of British Columbia are likely the least familiar with the 2S portion. Unsigned BC would like to draw attention to emerging 2Spirit spoken word hip-hop artist Tawahum and their unreleased track (Jan 17th 2022) Connect2Spirit, featured on this episode.

Episode 51: Some Hip Hop
Episode 51 is hosted by Brandon and is 100% local hip hop. It features three live performances from Unsigned BC Studios.
For our penultimate episode in season 1 we peruse through a number of hip-hop subgenres to showcase the depth of the local scene.
While BC is yet to rise to the status of Toronto when it comes to hip-hop influence and sound, the province clearly excels in a number of crossover subgenres like emo and hyper-pop, and those may offer a glimpse into what may be defined as the “Vancouver” hip-hop sound in the future.
This episode starts out strong with an introduction on the challenges of selling socialism to the “middle-peasant” provided by comrade Vladimir Lenin, pitch corrected to C-minor over a beautiful instrumental from Vancouver BC multi-instrumentalist and beatmaker Mr. Rust, who provides the beats for this episode. After the rousing introduction we jump right into things by checking out a few artists from the Okanagan Valley, with tracks that were kindly provided by the folks at The Vault Record Studio.
Half-way through this episode you will be treated to two live performances. The first live song you will hear is “Baby Ye” from Sooke artist IMNI. This was the very first perfomance in Unsigned BC Studio 2.0. I actually met IMNI while they were working at a Tim Hortons! They looked like a SoundCloud rapper so I gave them my card. Turns out they were a SoundCloud rapper and they came by to do the a performance with us. The second track is a rendition of Lulu by Glitterkid, performed at Unsigned BC Studio 1.0 on the very day the studio was torn down. You will hear a lot more from Glitterkid in the future, starting in our very next episode when we have an interview and two live songs featured in our LGBTQ2S+ episode series.
The latter half of this episode focuses on the crossover between hip-hop, pop, hyper-pop, synth pop, rock, 2000s punk rock, and emo. We treat you to some more unreleased Scarz, the subject of Episode 48, as he moves comfortably between nearly all of the aforementioned subgenres. However, this episode was actually inspired by a submission from Kid Benji titled Crazy. Like Scarz, I believe Kid Benji also has a bright future in music and may be a part of the vangaurd that helps establish a Vancouver hip-hop sound.
Also, Jack De Vil is pervasive in this episode. We conclude with a track from friend of the show Big Trizzy.
As mentioned, beats for this episode are provided by Mr. Rust, and Station IDs are provided by DWI, Indigowavv, and Raiderboi2500. Originally broadcast on Tuesday December 14th 2021 at 9:00pm PST on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM.

Episode 50: Jack Campbell
Episode 50 is hosted by Brandon. It features an interview with Vancouver musical phenom Jack Campbell and songs from his self-titled debut.
Episode 50 is a special treat for fans of guitar and violin. We called up Vancouver composer Jack Campbell and picked his brain for a bit, using our discussion as an excellent excuse to play some of his beautifully composed music off of his latest self-titled release. If the name Jack Campbell is familiar to you and you are a follower of Unsigned BC, it may be because Jack was the sole composer for our first ever radio drama effort, The Yellow Wallpaper. You can actually hear a quick sample of Jack’s scoring in this episode as we spin the first couple minutes of the radio drama! Excitingly, Jack will be scoring our third audio drama effort, the War of the Worlds (date TBA).
You may also be familiar with Jack’s work outside of Unsigned BC; his works have been played by the Trinanina Trio, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Paolo Bortolussi, and Beth Orson. He has collaborated with both Vancouver Art Gallery, and in August 2021, Jack was the Composer-in-Residence at the BC Canadian Music Centre.
In addition to playing his entire self-titled instrumental debut we also reach back into the archives and pull up Jack’s first ever submission to the show, a rendition of J.S. Bach’s Sarabande for Solo Violin. You can also hear Jack’s original Sonata for Solo Violin here!
We close the episode out with a very special feature. Jack’s colleague Mina, from the UBC School of Music has submitted an incredibly impressive pop ballad titled Unsteady.

Episode 49: Hype SH*T
Episode 49 is hosted by Brandon. It features a stacked lineup of high energy hip-hop songs from some of the best talent the province has to offer.
52 episodes makes a season and we are quickly approaching that mark! We have so much material to get through, not to mention Brandon’s Magnus Opus - the LGBTQ2S+ episode - but we feel like engaging in some productive procrastination. Everybody still wins, as Episode 49 is an absolute banger. We initially had planned on showcasing ALL of the best rappers in the province but we could not fit half of them into one episode. So, after putting out a call to local hip-hop artists, we have found some of the absolute best of the best when it comes to tracks to get you hyped! Episode 49 is the place to find some of the best high-energy hip-hop that British Columbia has to offer.
In addition to doing all of the heavy lifting for you, the listener, by sorting through the entire province’s hip-hop scene to create an episode that gets your adrenaline pumping, we also have some exciting news to share. Many of the artists featured in Episode 49 will be featured in Unsigned BC’s Live in Langford series. Through Spring and Summer of 2022, we plan on making Langford the music capital of the province. The City of Langford has already purchased a $10,000 P.A. system and is dedicating a stage area in a new development known as Langford Station for Unsigned BC artists! The new development will feature a number of artist studios, independent shops, and food trucks. This will provide a ready-made crowd for independent local artist to perform to. These events will be free to the public.
If you are curious what some of these artists might sound like live, you are in luck. This episode includes a brief clip of YBC Zyn’s performance at the Island Prospects Showchase - a virtual event that also features local artists and Unsigned BC Team members Illest Behaviour and Ms. Monica Miles, who combine for the track “Commercial” as heard on this episode.
If you like any of the artists that you hear, be sure to follow up by checking out their page and more of their music. And feel free to ask if they will be coming to perform in Langford!

Through the end of 2021 and the start of 2022 we plan on highlighting a handful of artists that we think you should keep your eyes on for the upcoming calendar year. Scarz is the first artist that we have decided to feature. Episode 46: Travis Scott and Live Nation
In Episode 46 Brandon and Kait play some great tracks from local artists. They also discuss the recent tragedy at the Travis Scott show, and Brandon gives a mini-lecture on tort law.
In the week leading up to the release of this episode the music world was hit by an unexpected tragedy. Eight audience members at Travis Scott’s Astroworld event, aged 14 to 27, died as a result of injuries sustained in a crowd surge.
Although it is not a local story, the catastrophic crowd control failure is likely to have implications that can be been felt across the music scene and at home in British Columbia. The province is home to a number of festivals, like Fvded in the Park in Surrey for example - an event hosted by Blueprint and Live Nation that attracts approximately 50,000 attendees. Like Fvded, Travis Scott’s ill fated performance was hosted by entertainment industry giant Live Nation, an organization with a significant presence in British Columbia. The fatal Astroworld performance also drew in a crowd of 50,000.
In Episode 46, hosts Brandon and Kait review Travis Scott’s less-than-admirable record of attending to the safety of fans at his shows. We then move on to play some incredible talent from across the province. Songs for this episode were selected by Kait from our Unsigned BC Library. To have your song featured in our library, please submit your track in accordance with the guidelines on our website.

The episode kicks off with co-hosts (/husband and wife) Brandon and Kait exploring a captivating new track from two artists that have not been played on Unsigned BC - Maddisun and Tenise Marie . Episode 43: Sabine Kahwaji

For Episode 43, Unsigned BC is thrilled to link up with Vancouver’s own Sabine Kahwaji for a quick discussion about her craft. A brief look at her credentials reveals that Sabine is one of Canada’s top emerging talents in the music video industry. Sabine has been busy filming and editing tour documentaries, concert videos, vlogs, and more for labels and artists such as 21 Entertainment, Sony Music Canada, Crowd Surf, Tyler Shaw, Kim Petras, Ryland James, Savannah Ré and more.
Sabine sheds light on a few basic industry concepts and offers some advice that anyone in freelance work should find helpful. Sabine was also kind enough to elaborate on what her experience has been like working as a woman in a largely male dominated industry.
The music selection for this episode includes a number of artists appearing for the first time on the show, including Sunny by Sunday, Baby AK, Kirbie, and Scott Klein. We also premiere a new track from Shaz, a young and talented hip-hop artist from Spectrum Community School (located just down the road from Unsigned BC Studios). Episode 40: Ancrnotokay and Yours Trilly
Episode 40 is a seminal episode for Unsigned BC. An artist feature, an in-studio performance, and more.
It feels like we hit our stride in Episode 40. The episode was a joint effort between husband and wife Brandon and Kait and it features two interviews and an in-studio performance.
As much as Brandon does not pick favorites, he is somewhat partial to Richmond hyper-pop artist ancrnotokay. This episode is largely born out of Brandon’s desire to share a local artist in the hyper-pop genre. Ancrnotokay provides the beats and calls in for a quick interview after Kait and Brandon listen to 5 of his tracks back-to-back-to-back. Tune in to learn about hyper-pop and hear Ancrnotokay tell you about the clothing / upcycling brand he is co-creating called Made in Memory.
After spinning a couple of great tracks from local artists, Kait and Brandon are treated to a visit from Victoria rapper and member of the musical group Break Water, Yours Trilly. Not only does Mr. Trilly bless us with an interview, he was also generous enough to perform an in-studio freestyle for us over beats from local producers Jvck Wilde and GSCO.
This one has a ton of action and seriously good music - don’t miss it. Live Tuesday October 19th at 9:00pm on Vancouver’s Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5fm.
